(WTXL) — To celebrate the life and legacy of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. the following events are going on in our local area:
Leon County
- Martin Luther King Jr., Leon County 2020 Celebration
Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor and The MLK Foundation of Florida, Inc. will host the Martin Luther King Jr. Leon County 2020 Celebration on Jan.15 at 11:45 a.m. in the Leon County Courthouse North Rotunda.
- MLK Day of Service
The Tallahassee Urban League will be hosting a day service on Jan.20 at their offices, 923 Old Bainbridge Road from 11 a.m-2 p.m.
- NAACP Commemorative Breakfast
The Tallahassee Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host its 35th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Breakfast on Jan. 17 at 7 a.m. at the Leon County Civic Center.
- NAACP Commemorative Service and Rally
The Tallahassee Branch of the NAACP will host its annual Reverend C.K. Steele Sr. Commemorative Service and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Rally on Jan.29 starting at 10 a.m.
Lowndes County
- VSU special day of service
From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, VSU students will gather on campus for a special Day of Service project.
- VSU worhip service
At 3 p.m. on Sunday, VSU hosts a worship service in the Student Union Ballroom.
- NAACP March
At 10:15 a.m. on Monday, the Mu Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the student chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host a march to commemorate King’s contributions.
Colquitt County
- Scholarship Breakfast
On Saturday, Jan. 18, there will be Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast hosted by the Colquitt County Branch of the NAACP at the Applebee’s on 421 Veterans Parkway from 8-10 a.m.
- Painting and Sip
Painting in Power and Perseverance event will be held on Saturday at ExactlyU, 119 Talmadge Drive, at 6 p.m.
- MLK Sunday Service
The Colquitt County Branch of the NAACP and the Colquitt County Interdenominational Christian Alliance will be hosting a special Sunday Evening MLK Service at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 421 Sixth Avenue N.W. at 5 p.m.
- Canned Food Drive
A canned food drive will be held on Monday at Ryce Community Center, 305 Seventh Street N.W., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Birthday Celebration
The Southwest Georgia Bank and the Women’s Federated Club of Moultrie will host an Annual Birthday Celebration at Grant Chapel AME Church, 318 W. Central Avenue, at 11 a.m. on Monday.
- MLK Parade
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Parade will take place on the Downtown Moultrie Square at 2 p.m., with Commissioner Barbara Jelks as grand marshal on Monday. The MLK Culminating Celebration will follow the parade at 3 p.m. at the Ryce Community Center.
