LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — With just a week left to register to vote, the Leon County Supervisor of Elections is reaching out to everyone including those at the Detention Facility.
Volunteers were sent to help get inmates registered to vote. The Leon County Sheriff's Office checked the records and contacted each eligible inmate.
This particular outreach project is a partnership with the Florida Dream Project.
"There is a lot of fear in the community. About trying to get registered if you've been convicted of a felony," explained Mark Early, the Leon County Supervisor of Elections. "That's because people have been through the system and there's a certain level of distrust there. We're trying to dispel that fear and distrust."
Earley says his team will likely do another voter outreach at the Detention Facility in the fall just ahead of the presidential election.
