TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Many people think of the pool and the grill when Memorial Day rolls around.
However, this day is much more somber for many families across the county. For some, it's just the last Monday in May.
"I think of him a lot, but especially during this time of year," said Bonnie McHugh, a Gold Star Family Member.
But to others, it's a somber reminder of the price of freedom.
"He lived and died the way he chose to," said McHugh. "He would not have wanted to die of old age."
Bonnie McHugh is a member of a bittersweet club; one filled with both heartache and pride.
"Very recently, I became the first Gold Star Family Member to receive the Gold Star," said McHugh.
The Gold Star label goes to the family of a soldier killed in the line of duty. McHugh's father died in Vietnam when she was a teenager.
"He's the reason I do this. This is my father," McHugh explained.
Memorial Day is a tough day for McHugh, but at least she doesn't have to go through it alone.
"Those that have worn the uniform and those family members," said Don Gerteisen, an American Legion member. "We all have a bond."
One way to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and say thank you is by putting flags on their graves. The American Legion Post 13 made sure each veteran's grave at Veterans Memorial Park received a flag before taking a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.
"It's not a day for partying. It's not a day to take off and have barbecues, said McHugh. "It's a day that we're supposed to remember."
A day to remember the men and women who lost their lives to protect the country.
