GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. — As the temperature picks up, Gadsden County Sheriff's Office deputies are making sure seniors in the community are taken care of.
Gadsden County has extra patrol officers out and about to check on the seniors during this heat wave.
In addition to the extra community policing, GCSO is also calling on volunteers with the Keeping Independent Seniors Safe program. The program helps the seniors who live on their own year round, but with the heat we're feeling, those volunteers are doing extra calls and home checks to make sure the seniors are comfortable.
"We are advising our senior citizens to make sure they're staying in a cool place. If they are outside, limit your outside activity," said Sgt. Anglie Hightower, with GCSO. "If you have children outside, limit their play activity and make sure you monitor them."
According to the CDC, older adults do not adjust as well as young people to such high temperatures and this makes them prone to suffer heat stress.
Sgt. Hightower says so far, the community is remaining safe.
