LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — There were many resources available to help victims after Hurricane Michael through disaster recovery organizations like FEMA and various non-profits. But what about after the tornado?

Five homes in Leon County were destroyed and five were damaged.

WTXL was in the Baum community Tuesday and many of the people that we spoke to who were affected by the tornado said they felt they had been very well taken care of by disaster recovery organizations so far.

Once the tornado hit, the Red Cross came out to assess the damage. While there, they gave referrals to people who are displaced.

Those referrals are good at the Salvation Army, which is providing clothing, furniture and food. They were also in the Baum community on Monday and Tuesday, with their food truck serving hot meals and water.

Red Cross Volunteers met with victims to assess their immediate emergency needs. Victims then got a debit card to use for a hotel, food and clothes. They are also given comfort kits with hygiene products. Tarps and clean-up kits are provided as well as health and mental health services.

Leon County Emergency Officials say disasters happen and it is important to be as prepared as possible.

If you need help because of the tornado, you are asked to call the 211 Big Bend helpline by dialing 211 or 850-617-6333.
