MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) — A visit to a Midway hotel is ending with a police investigation for one Panama City man.
Jon Sewell says someone took almost $10,000 out of his suitcase at the Country Inn and Suites in Midway. Sewell checked into the hotel Tuesday, ahead of an auction he was planning to go to in Tallahassee.
He left the hotel and, when he came back, he learned that his room had been given to someone else and his belongings were left in the hallway. Sewell noticed the zippers were undone and when he checked his luggage, found that his money was gone.
While the hotel has cameras, that particular room is in a blind spot, so the camera couldn't even catch it.
"That was not only my life savings, that was my business money as well. I'm a victim of Hurricane Michael over in Panama City," said Sewell. "I was gaining money to put a roof over my house. I need a forklift for my business. I need money to pay my bills. Unfortunately, that money is now gone and I need to figure out what happens next."
Sewell is now working with the Midway Police, the State Attorney's Office, and the Department of Business Professional Regulations.
WTXL reached out to Country Inn & Suites for comment, but the owners say that since this is still under investigation, they don't want to say anything.
Midway Police are still investigating the matter and also will not comment until that investigation is over.
We'll continue to follow the case and update you as soon as there is some resolution.
