TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A ninth grade student of Leon High is facing charges after officials say he brought a gun to school.

The student was arrested on Thursday, December 20. Deputies say that the student had a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun.

At about 8:30 that morning, school faculty were notified about the firearm by another student.  The School Resource Deputy and a member of the Leon High School faculty found the student and separated him from the other students. It was then, according to deputies, that they found the gun.

“The excellent relationship between the School’s faculty, the Resource Deputies and the students has created an environment in which the students communicate their observations and concerns daily," Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell said. "This crime was resolved without incident because a student observed something he knew was wrong and then said something about it.”

After the student's arrest, he was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. He's being charged with carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a firearm.
