TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Florida Department of Transportation is recognizing the Leon County Sheriff's Office traffic unit as one of the top traffic safety programs in the state.
LCSO handled about 15,000 traffic stops last year, with only 15 percent of those resulting in tickets. There was also 6 percent less traffic crashes than the year before.
The deputies say they are very proud of the award.
"I mean anytime you win an award and that you put a lot of hard work into it is exciting and the guys are just ecstatic that their hard work paid off and it shows in more than just how the numbers went down," said Deputy Dave Teems, the public information officer at the Leon County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Dave Teems goes on to say the work done by the traffic unit was done in part by traffic checkpoints and social media campaigns.
