LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County Sheriff's Office is continuing to involve a fatal crash on Blountstown Highway involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Wednesday afternoon, deputies responded to the area of Blountstown Highway and Campground Pond Road for a pedestrian-involved car crash.

LCSO says 28-year-old Jimmy Figueroa died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Members of the LCSO Traffic Unit are continuing to investigate the crash.


Fatal pedestrian-involved crash on Blountstown Highway closes road to Fort Braden Elementary

LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A fatal pedestrian-involved crash on Blountstown Highway has shut down both lanes to and from Fort Braden Elementary School.

Authorities responded to the car crash near Blountstown Highway and Campground Pond Road around 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office confirmed that traffic homicide investigators are working the crash. They confirmed that at least one person has died as a result of the pedestrian involved crash.

Blountstown Highway will remain closed in both directions for several hours as authorities continue to investigate. 

School officials at Fort Braden School sent a Listserv email to parents about the crash around 2 p.m. They say the accident is currently blocking the way to and from Fort Braden. 

Officials suggested the following routes for parents who are coming to pick up their children.

  • Silver Lake Road to Forest Road 301 west then right/north on 325 back to Highway 20 (fastest route)
  • I-10 west to exit 181 then south on 267 to State Road 20 then east to Fort Braden (longest route 30-35 minutes)
  • Forest Road at Talquin Management area on Geddie Road to Highway 20 (Forestry Officers will be available to direct traffic.)

"We are anticipating Buses will be VERY late arriving and leaving Fort Braden today. We will be holding students in classes until buses arrive via the Gadsden County detour," school officials say. "We will be dismissing parent pick up students and walkers when appropriate. Please call if you have questions. We will send further information as it becomes available."
