ALBANY, Ga. (SWPHD) -- Public Health Officials say a stomach bug is sweeping through Southwest Georgia, and they say there is no vaccine. The virus causes diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps.

Health Officials say they are getting reports from schools, child care center, restaurants and other facilities with clusters of norovirus-like illness.

The Southwest Public Health District is urging the public to protect themselves from the virus because there is no vaccine to prevent the norovirus and no drug to treat people who get sick with it.

Below are a few ways to reduce your chance of getting the virus:

1) Wash your hands (especially around and under the fingernails) carefully with soap and water.

2) Carefully wash fruits and vegetables, and cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly before eating them.

3) After throwing up or having diarrhea, immediately clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces by using bleach-based household cleaner.
