ATLANTA (AP) - U.S. Department of Education officials are warning that $9.9 million of Georgia's Race to the Top grand funding is in jeopardy.

In a letter to Tuesday, officials said the threat to withhold funding stemmed from the state's failure to implement a performance-based teacher and leader evaluation program.

U.S. Department of Education officials say the letter merely demonstrates the department's intention to begin withholding funding if state officials don't reach a compromise by the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.

Officials say Georgia would have until the end of the grant period - September 2014 - to demonstrate corrective actions if the grant funding is withheld.

U.S. Department of Education officials say Georgia would be the first state to have Race to the Top grant funding withheld.
