GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - On Tuesday, the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office hosted a press conference to announce they have lowered their inmate total to under 100 inmates for the first time in three decades.
Only a year ago, the jail had more than double the amount of inmates that they do now. One of the main reasons GCSO said they have been able to cut down the number of inmates is their Re-Entry Program.
Major Robert Barkley, Bureau Chief of the Gadsden County Jail, said it has been a group effort to keep people out of jail.
"If we don’t keep doing the things we are doing with law enforcement, with the judge, with the state attorneys office, the count will continue to go up. We can not just stand still, because the count is low today," said Major Barkley. "We know the count can be low today, but know tomorrow it can be right back up, so we have to keep being productive."
When asked if any guards would lose their jobs because of less inmates, GCSO said no because there is always work to be done.
