TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A billion-dollar lawsuit has been filed against the state of Florida.

The lawsuit filed Monday by two Florida State University donors calls for the state to match private donations to Florida's public colleges, universities and their students.

In 2003, two graduates of the FSU College of Law donated $100,000 to create an endowed scholarship for students.

According to the lawsuit, four statutes require the state to match private donations that support higher education.

While the state matched the initial donation, the FSU donors say two other donations in 2011 and 2015 weren't matched.

The law firm representing the donors says the state has an obligation to pay years' worth of donations to 40 public colleges and universities.

The governor's office says they are reviewing the lawsuit. Last month, a similar suit was filed by two University.
