ATLANTA (AP) - Federal officials say former Georgia schools superintendent Linda Schrenko will serve out the rest of her eight-year sentence on home confinement.
The Augusta Chronicle reports Schrenko pleaded guilty in 2006 to embezzling money from the State Department of Education for her failed 2002 gubernatorial election campaign.
Federal Bureau of Prisons Spokesman Chris Burke told the Associated Press Schrenko was serving at a minimum security facility in Coleman, Fla. and was released Wednesday. Burke says Schrenko's sentence expires Aug. 21, 2013.
Officials have said Schrenko and a computer firm owner stole more than $600,000 in federal education money geared toward programs for honors students and two schools for the deaf. Officials have said Schrenko also used about $9,300 of the money for a facelift.
