ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Who determines the eligibility rules for Florida high school athletes could be changing if a pair of bills in the state legislature continue to get traction.
The Florida High School Athletic Association is ramping up its opposition to the bills. The group believes the bills would create "free agency" in high school sports by softening its rules against recruiting.
The group received support when the National Federation of State High School Associations passed a resolution this week supporting its opposition to the bills.
If signed into law, the bills would also alter FHSAA's current makeup itself, by changing the current composition of its board to include state appointees. It would also set new rules for how FHSAA levies fines and collects fees.
