MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) - When natural disasters occur, it is common for people to take advantage of survivors by posing as official disaster aid workers or as relatives trying to help survivors complete their applications.
FEMA says it is unfortunate, but some people take advantage of a bad situation and scam people into giving them money, claiming it is going towards relief efforts.
Nikki Gaskins, with FEMA, said don't trust someone who asks for money. Federal and local disaster workers do not solicit or accept money.
"We just want to let people know that, we do have disaster survivors assistant crews going door to door. They will be dressed in FEMA attire," said Gaskins. "They will also have a badge and feel free, you have all the right to ask if you can see that badge."
