TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Four men's athletic teams at Florida A&M University, including the basketball team, have been banned from postseason play due to NCAA compliance violations.

Wednesday morning, the FAMU athletic department made the announcement at a press conference.

Four teams, the men's basketball team, the men's golf team, and the men's indoor and outdoor track teams, cannot play in conference championships after the season ends.

FAMU officials say the ban comes after the programs failed to meet the NCAA Progress Rate (APR) requirements.

Overall, the Rattlers men's basketball team is 10-14 and 7-2 in MEAC conference play.

As of now, these four teams are the only ones effected by the APR sanctions. Teams in the fall will be evaluated in May when the new scores come out.

School officials say several enhancements have been made at FAMU to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again. So far, they've hired a new compliance athletic director and four academic advisors.

The NCAA's APR requirements stipulate that teams must earn a four-year average APR of 930 to compete in championships.

Teams receive points when student-athletes on athletic-related financial aid stays in school and remains academically eligible. The teams points are then divided by points possible and multiplied by 1,000 to determine the APR rate.
