TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A man is facing additional charges after he tried to escape from a Leon County courtroom during an emergency competency hearing.
Around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the Leon County Sheriff's Office says a judge was holding an emergency competency hearing for the defendant, 41-year-old Michael Bair.
Bair was on trial, facing charges of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.
After the competency hearing ended, the judge remanded Bair into custody until the assigned psychologist could visit the detention center and complete his diagnosis of Bair.
At that point, deputies say Bair leapt towards the courtroom well gates, abruptly slammed them open and ran out the courtroom doors. He ran towards the north rotunda but was caught in the hallway by a State Attorney investigator.
During the struggle to take Bair into custody, a deputy used a taser to subdue Bair. At that point, Bair was secured in handcuffs and transported to jail without further incident.
Bair is now facing charges for attempted escape and resisting arrest with violence.
