CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) - In Cairo, baseball legend Jackie Robinson is being honored on his 100th birthday.
Robinson grew up near Cairo and left his mark on the community. Supporters filled Cairo High School to honor the first African American Major League Baseball player.
A special game was played and special guests from the Boys and Girls Club got a chance to walk on the field.
Chad Parkerson, Head Coach of the Cairo High School baseball team, said it's important to remember Jackie Robinson.
"For what he means to the sport and that's what we are trying to do today is promote the sport," said Parkerson. "More importantly, it's what he has meant to society in general as he broke down barriers, the courage that he had to overcome adversity and his character."
As apart of the celebration, the Syrupmakers unveiled their new Brooklyn Dodgers uniforms in honor of the team Jackie Robinson was apart of.
