SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah's film office director has been terminated following complaints surrounding the production of "SpongeBob 2 The Movie."
A city memo accuses Film Services Director Jay Self of failing to properly plan and manage arrangements for the filming. City officials fired Self Monday afternoon.
The memo cites complaints about Self's role from businesses, state officials and the Savannah Economic Development Authority. The Sept. 23 memo, from Self's boss Joseph Shearouse, was obtained by WTOC-TV and states that Self was told that his job was in jeopardy in August.
The Savannah Morning News reports storefronts along Broughton Street were recently painted to resemble a seaside community in preparation for filming through November.
City spokesman Brett Bell says Shearouse will assume many of Self's duties during the city's search for a replacement.
