TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)—“Am I Ugly?” It’s a question thousands of teens and tweens all across America are asking complete strangers online. It’s a dangerous game where a child posts a video of themselves asking viewers to rate their looks—a game that in many cases only further damages their already fragile self image. Some are just looking for attention, while many are seeking validation.

WTXL’s Mika Highsmith sat down with a group of seniors at Chiles High School to find out what their thoughts were as they witnessed what many of their peers are doing. Jordan Thompson said, “What irks me is that someone is in the back supporting her behavior.”

Family therapist Jane Marks says this new trend is downright dangerous. “Perceived physical attraction, whether others think you’re pretty—plays a huge role in an adolescents self image.”

Marks offers the following tips to parents, on how to keep your children safe on the web.

Tips from family therapist Jane Marks:

1. Be mindful of what you're kids are doing.

2. If there is a history of depression pay even closer attention.

3. Be aware of every electronic tool and what your kids are posting on social media.

4. Create successful and positive experiences where kids can express themselves in other ways.

5. Participate in skill building like playing sports

6. Help kids build relationships that build self confidence.

7. If the situation doesn't improve seek professional help.
