(WTXL) — Rebecca Weaver with the United Way of the Big Bend joined ABC 27 on Wednesday to tell us about Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

VITA was designed to help those looking to save on tax preparations. They can get all of their refund back and avoid the tax refund predatory lenders who take a large portion of the return

Each year, about 60% of Tallahassee-area EITC recipients pay an average of $300 in tax preparation fees simply to access this benefit.

People who generally make $66,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking.

IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Volunteers completed 1,342 tax returns and participating tax payers received more than $1.6 million.
