Home and Garden: Traditional Neighborhood Development

Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)---Wouldn't it be wonderful to build a town from scratch and know in 50 years how successful it'll be? That's where the importance and benefits of Traditional Neighborhood Developments come in.

A Traditional Neighborhood Development, or TND includes a variety of housing types, a mixture of land uses, a walk-able design and often a transit option. TNDs can be developed from an existing developed area or as a new large scale project like Tallahassee's Southwood or Evening Rose.

Rebekah Rivers joined us this morning for another edition of Your Home and Garden to discuss the benefits that Traditional Neighborhood Developments could have on Leon County and the Tallahassee Area.

For example TNDs:

  • Create walk-able neighborhoods
  • Brings life to communities by allowing mixtures of uses
  • Encourages transportation mode options
  • Protects open space
  • Preserves "village center" and public spaces concept
  • Creates communities designed for live, work and play
  • Reduces vehicle congestion
