Layan Abu Tarboush

WTXL ABC 27

Multi Media Journalist

Layan Abu Tarboush is your neighborhood news reporter for Thomasville. She joined the WTXL ABC 27 team in 2024.

I was born and raised in Amman, Jordan but I’m originally Palestinian—and yes, Arabic is my first language.

Journalism wasn’t my first career choice—I come from a family of business owners so I naturally gravitated towards that in college. I realized I had a unique perspective and a talent for storytelling, and coming from a place where so much change is needed, I saw journalism as a way to make a difference in my community. So, I switched my major—and I fell in love with journalism.

I studied in Miami, and while it was a bit of a culture shock, I made it through! I earned a Bachelor of Science in Digital Communications and Multimedia Production with a Minor in International Relations from Florida International University.

During my last two years in college, I created a package every week, covering everything from major political events to environmental stories.

I even freelanced for the Miami Herald, where I produced their first-ever news package and won a Hearst Journalism Award for reporting on extreme heat in Miami.

One of my most memorable (yet not-so-great) moments was reporting in the Everglades, surrounded by insects. It was definitely an adventure I won’t forget.

I also had the chance to cover the announcement that Miami would be a host city for the World Cup, standing right alongside the mayor and other key figures in the city.

What I love most about being a Thomasville neighborhood reporter is meeting people, listening to their stories, and gaining a deeper understanding of this area and its culture.

When I’m not chasing stories, you’ll find me exploring Thomasville—Cherokee Lake Park and downtown are my favorite spots so far. I’m also a big foodie, always on the lookout for my next great meal.

I’d love to hear from you! Don’t be intimidated by my name—reach out to me with any Thomasville stories. Whether it’s a neighborhood concern, an issue that needs attention, or something exciting happening in the community, contact me at Layan.Tarboush@WTXL.tv.
