TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's been 13 years since singer Aaliyah's life was tragically cut short and fans are still remembering her style and unique sound.
Born on January 16, 1979 as Aaliyah Dana Haughton, she was destined to leave her mark on the world. Especially with a name that meant " the highest, most exalted one."
Aaliyah hit the music scene in 1994 with her debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number." The album established Aaliyah as an artist and earned her a spot amongst other young female artists such as Brandy and Monica.
After rumors of a marriage to R. Kelly, who produced the album, the singer was looking for ways that she could reinvent her sound and grow as an artist. So she turned to two new and mostly unheard of producers, Timbaland and Missy Elliott.
Whit the help of the duo, Aaliyah released her second album, "On In A Million" in 1996. The sound was so unique and fresh that Aaliyah changed the sound of R&B. With her sultry, smooth vocals and Timbaland's smooth beats, Aaliyah's music launched an era.
Her style also caught the eye of many. She became a model for Tommy Hilfiger and had girls mimicking her style. The way she wore her hair, with one side swooped over her eye, became her trademark. It's hard to talk about style and music of the 90's and not mention Aaliyah's name.
Aaliyah also made a name for herself as an actress. In 2000, Aaliyah made her acting debut in "Romeo Must Die" as Trish O'Day. She also played in the movie "Queen Of The Damned."
But Aaliyah's death was sadly cut short on August 25, 2001. As she and members of her entourage were leaving the Bahamas after filming her video "Rock The Boat," the plane carrying Aaliyah and eight others crashed.
Her death left millions wondering just where she could have gone with her career. Still to this day, she continues to be an inspiration for singers worldwide.
