"The Little Mermaid" is a beloved fairy tale that can be as bright and animated as the red-haired princess, or as melancholy and wistful as Copenhagen's iconic waterside statue. Company Etudes Youth
Ensemble Ballet (CEYEB) presents a lyrical, hopeful version of the Hans Christian Andersen classic on June 10 and 11 at Lincoln Auditorium.
Staging a ballet version of "The Little Mermaid" presents several challenges, but the all-youth performing Company of the Ballet Arts Conservatory of Tallahassee (BACT) sails through with this epic adventure.
The young dancers skillfully portray the movement of the sea, the devious nature of the sea, snakes, the evil of the Sea Witch, the delight of the Little Mermaid, and all the little fish besides.
Clever set pieces, including a ship that breaks apart during a dramatic shipwreck on stormy seas, frame the story.
Original choreography by artistic director Amy Lowe and a classical score by Tchaikovsky and Delibes draw the imagination to the Little Mermaid's dreams of land and daydreams of love.
Guest artist Herman Ramos and senior CEYEB soloist Sarah Trescott are representative of the level of talent displayed in "The Little Mermaid."
Ramos is a dance instructor and choreographer who has performed with the DansCompany of Gainesville and The Brown Dance Project, and is currently an MFA candidate at FSU in dance performance.
