TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Cancer is a disease that affects millions every year and unfortunately, many are left to deal with the loss. Spouses are left without their significant others and children are sometimes left without their parents.

But a local organization is trying to help soften the blow for the widows of those who succumb to cancer.  It's called FreshNewStart.org and an event coming up this weekend will raise funds for the non-profit organization.

It's called "Far(m) outside the Ordinary" and has a special meaning behind it for the sponsors of the event.

Author Prissy Elrod and Katrice Howell, owner of The Space at Feather Oaks stopped by WTXL's Midday and chatted with WTXL's Abbey Maurer about the upcoming event.

Elrod's book, "Far Outside the Ordinary" is actually the inspiration behind the fundraiser.  She explained how she became involved with the organization.

"Shortly before I published my book, I met LeAnne Gibbs, who is the founder of FreshNewStart and she had recently lost her husband and I didn't really know her but I knew her story," said Elrod.  "So even though my book was ready to print, I met her and she told me a little about her organization and so I decided to contact my publisher and say I want to put the last page of my book, devoted to FreshNewStart so that it would spread the word about the organization."

Far(m) Outside the Ordinary takes place this Sunday, November 16th at The Space at Feather Oaks located at 6500 Miccosukee Road in Tallahassee.

It kicks off at 5 p.m. and will feature live entertainment from the Farewell Angelina band.  Food will be provided by Miccosukee Root Cellar.
