Women’s Tennis Dominates No. 15 Miami

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team (8-1, 1-0) dominated rival and No. 15 Miami. The Seminoles took it to the Hurricanes, winning 5-2. Florida State also defeated cross-town rival, FAMU, 4-1.

“Today was a really good day for us,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “We started a little slow in doubles. We were not executing the way we could have. We were playing a little hesitant and that was a difference for sure.”

The day began with the Noles losing their first doubles point of the season. Senior Julia Mikulski and junior Andrea Garcia were the first doubles loss of the day losing on court two, 6-0. The Noles tied the doubles point up at one with a 6-3 win on court three from senior Ariana Rahmnaparast and junior Carla Touly. The duo improved to 3-0 in doubles this spring. Miami bounced back to take the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court one.

Florida State bounced back in singles to take five of six first sets. Junior Nandini Das dominated her first set taking it 6-1 and jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the second set.

“Being able to come off the doubles point and winning five of six first sets that is college tennis 101 right there,” said Hyde. “When you lose the doubles point you need to step away and immediately move on to the next task. That tells you about the maturity of this team and the belief they have in each other.”

Then the rain began to fall. After a delay and heading indoors, Florida State scored and scored quickly. Das finished first with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court four and was quickly followed by Rahmanparast with a 6-2, 6-3 on court five for their first lead of the match.

“As soon as we got indoors and got warmed up the momentum immediately shifted in our direction on every court,” said Hyde.

The scoring continued to score as Touly dominated the second set on court two. She won the first set 6-4 and took the second 6-2. Sophomore Emmanuelle Salas clinched her first match of the year to give FSU a 4-1 lead.

The Garnet and Gold expanded their lead to 5-1 before Oparenovic lost on No. 4 Estela Perez-Somarriba on court one.

FAMU Match Recap

The Noles cruised through the doubles point taking courts one and three. Touly and Garcia took court one 6-0, while Mikulski and Rahmanparast took court three 6-2. Das and Hule did not finish but lead 5-3.

In singles, Florida State jumped out and took all five first sets. They turned that into three singles wins. Garcia took court 5 6-0, 6-4, Mikulski took court 4 6-1, 6-2 and Das took court 3 6-2, 6-2.

“It is great to beat Miami and I am happy for our seniors, I am happy for everyone who stepped up and took care of their work today. That was a big, fun and complete win today. It was exactly what we needed at exactly the right time heading to another big in-state rivalry on Tuesday night.”

Florida State now looks forward to taking on No. 24 Florida on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Gainesville before coming home to take on No. 4 Duke next Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
