ANNA MARIA, FL (WWSB) - Whether it's an alligator in a swimming pool or a python in the Everglades, animal encounters in Florida have been more common as of late, but what one Suncoast resident captured on video Sunday is anything but common.

Whitney Phillips Watson was on a boat near Bean Point, approximately 300 or 400 yards from the shores of Anna Maria Island when she came across a large hammerhead shark swimming in the ocean.

As the vessel moved in closer, Watson could tell the shark was chasing a tarpon.

According to Watson, the ocean predator "played" with the tarpon for about five minutes before finally devouring it!

The shark was definitely not trying to avoid the boat, says Watson, who estimates the shark was between 10-12 feet long.
