Street cameras in Valdosta helping solve homicides

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - In Valdosta, cameras are helping solve homicide cases.

Police Chief Brian Childress says the cameras play a vital role in sharing information when the community can't.

Childress can recall up to five homicides that have been solved with the help of street cameras since they were installed.

The most recent case was last week when a man was shot and killed in the Ora Lee West Housing Authority complex. With no witnesses providing any details, Childress says investigators turned to the street cameras.

He says that these cameras are like puzzle pieces. Without them, police would face a major road block in solving cases.

Childress says law enforcement cannot solve every case with cameras alone. He says that VPD relies on community members and forensic evidence to help stop and solve crimes.
