BLOUNTSTOWN, Fla. (AP) — Two people received minor injuries and a number of vehicles were damaged when an apparent tornado touched down at a state prison near Blountstown in Florida's Panhandle.
Calhoun County Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel says two workers arriving for their shifts at the Calhoun Correctional Institution were injured when the storm struck around 4 a.m. CST.
Kimbrel says between 25 and 30 vehicles were damaged in the parking lot and some of the fencing around the prison's perimeter was knocked down. He says no one escaped from the facility, which has a maximum capacity of 1,354 inmates.
A number of sheriff's deputies and correctional officers are on the scene. Kimbrel says the Florida Highway Patrol is also assisting.
He says there were no other reports of injury or damage in the area.
