It's cool. It's different. It's unique. The search is on for the unconventional in our very own backyard. Over the next several weeks, WTXL's Christine Souders is taking you on an adventure to discover what makes the area 'Funky with an F.'
TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - This week we made a stop at a local barbecue joint with a unique twist. Not only will the location surprise you, but the food is a made from a secret family recipe that keeps customers coming back for more.
"We're on the corner of Apalachee Parkway and Capital Circle in a gas station parking lot," said Nicole Harris, Co-owner of Mo Betta Barbecue.
Not your average place to eat, but Mo Betta Barbecue's Nicole Harris said their location is what gets customers to the window.
"We have a constant flow of cars and people. It's a 24 hour gas station," said Harris.
February marked 7 years for Mo Betta Barbecue in Tallahassee.
Employee Tommy McKeliver gets up bright and early to get the meat smoking. "I come in, turn the smoker on, prep the meat and season it," said Tommy McKeliver.
Prep is key, since everything is homemade and slow-cooked. "Ribs 2 hours, chicken 3 hours, brisket 5 hours," said Harris.
The mouth-watering part is their secret recipes.
"We make our own dry rub and barbecue sauce," Harris said, "Our little secret. Mo Betta Secret."
Customers said it's that secret that keeps them coming back. "Unlike anything else in the area. Very unique," said Gerald, a customer at Mo Betta BBQ.
Harris said she and her husband Mo owe their success to the customers.
She said all advertising is word of mouth and that people even donate wood regularly.
"It's made with love and we won't disappoint," said Harris.
