VALDOSTA, GA (WTXL) - A man is in custody after Valdosta Police say he ran from the scene of a car crash that killed a 22-year-old woman.
According to the Valdosta Police Department, they were called out to a crash in the 200 block of Norman Drive regarding two vehicles that had crashed head on Wednesday.
Police say Anthony Curtis Smith was driving one of the vehicles and attempted to run from the scene after a crash but was stopped after bystanders chased him down.
The second vehicle flipped upside down after the crash and the driver of had to be extracted from inside.
Police say he was taken to the hospital with two fractured legs but is in stable condition. His passenger, 22-year-old Shelby Morton, was taken to the hospital but later died from her injuries.
After an investigation into the crash, officers say Smith crossed the center line, causing the vehicles to crash head-on.
Smith was charged with driving with a suspended license, driving on the wrong side of the road, leaving the scene of an accident and homicide by vehicle.
Officers say Smith was taken to the Lowndes County Jail.
