TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Hurricane season officially begins in just over five weeks.

Storms can take it's toll on businesses - specially if the power is out for a while or strong winds or flooding cause damage.

That's why Leon County officials are taking action to make sure businesses are prepared.

They're teaching resiliency today with the Ready Business Huricane Workshop. It's a workshop the county is hosting along wiith the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes and FEMA.

Matt Cauvell with Leon County tells me that if a business closes during a Hurricane there's a 50% chance it will never reopen.

Today business owners will learn best practices about preparing for a disaster to keep the businesses here in town up and running.

The focus isn't only on businesses, but also on non-profits like American Red Cross and even the Tallahassee Museum.

Earlier this year, Leon County was choosen to be the very first Hurricane Strong community in the nation, and this workshop is the first event the agency is hosting under the eyes of the entire country.

The workshop is almost at full capacity, but if you'd like to learn how to protect your business or non-profit from natural disaster, just reach out to the county.
