JEFFERSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - This is the first year the school district has switched to being run by Charter Somerset Academy.

The move to become a charter school was the best way to keep the struggling district from shutting down completely.

Superintendent Marianne Arbulu says there are now extended programs, bus routes, and uniforms.

When students come back they'll see a campus make over, as well as changes to course work.

Jefferson County is the first charter school district in Florida.

Somerset Academy Charter School was founded in 1997 and runs k-12 educational programs in Florida, Nevada and Texas.
