TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)- Many college students fear that they will gain more weight towards the end of their college career due to bad food choices and lazy snacking, often credited with causing what Florida State University students call "freshman 15".
According to the American College Health Association, the percent of overweight and obese American College students increased from 27.4 percent in 2006 to 29.2 percent in 2011 and say that it is still on the rise.
The FSU sustainable campus group is working across lines of division to grow community based food systems that work for everyone. Monday, the group hosted a workshop, teaching students how to grow their own food. Devonte White, FSU senior, said "you learning to grow your own food, not only helps you with your lifestyle, and your choice of being healthy, but it can help your family and those around you also."
The group along with the office of Student Affairs hope that this workshop will help decrease student obesity and put an ease on their budget. Student will be able to plant any type of fruits or vegetables using seeds from the Leon County Library after checking out a book.
