FSU students excited for Homecoming despite Greek life ban

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Today marks the start of Homecoming Week for Florida State students.

Students are excited as they start preparations for the week's festivities, however, there's a different vibe on campus this year because of the Greek life suspension following the death of Andrew Coffey.

Students we talked to had mixed feelings. Those involved in Greek life are in a funk while other students are excited and are just trying to have a normal Homecoming Week.

The FSU Student Union was abuzz Monday morning with many students drawing Homecoming signs for their organizations and participating in community projects.

Although a weight hangs over Greek life and the school after the death of fraternity student Andrew Coffey, students are trying to move forward, by remembering the loss of a friend and rallying around Homecoming as a unifying force the student body needs right now.

Sorority Row seems unusually quiet for the start of Homecoming Week. While Greek life members may not be able to participate in their usual events, the rest of the student body is hard at work preparing for Homecoming.

This time last year, all Greek members were busy decorating their Homecoming floats. Since Greek participation in Homecoming is banned this year, none of the sororities or fraternities are involved they way they typically would be.

Greek life, affiliated organizations can not be involved with Homecoming this year, however, sorority and fraternity students can still participate in activities and organizations outside of their Greek ones.

This year's Homecoming theme is a timely one: "The Spirit of Unity."

Students are being respectful considering everything that's been going on, but are looking forward to celebrating Homecoming Week.
