TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Historically black colleges and universities are seeing an upsurge in support and donations, and this includes Florida A&M University.

FAMU has raised over $7 million this academic year with still a half of the year to go.

FAMU's goal going into the year was $11 million, which the head of FAMU Fundraising believes the school will break.

"So far it's been trending up in the second half of the fiscal year, so we're looking forward to it continuing to trend up. I think that there is a lot of excitement and energy around what is going on here at the university," said Shawnta Friday-Stroud, Vice President of University Advancement. "A lot of the positive activities and academic programs we have going on that our donors are definitely engaged and supporting us."

Last fiscal year, Spelman College in Atlanta raised a record $48 million in donations.
