TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- The community is coming together to celebrate culture and honor history this weekend.

The City of Tallahassee is hosting several events to honor Black History Month.

"We are fortunate to live in a diverse community that embraces its rich culture," Mayor Andrew Gillum said in a release. "By sharing and celebrating our successes, we can help ensure that our children will never have limitations placed on them because of the color of their skin."

Events begin on Saturday, February 27 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. That's when the Lawrence-Gregory Community Center is hosting t its 10th annual Black History Month program. This year’s theme is Black History Success Stories.  The line-up includes live music, dance and other special performances and even a "red carpet moment" to honor local leaders.

On Sunday, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., FAMU is hosting the inaugural Harambee Festival in Cascades Park. The festival will explore the contributions of dynamic African Americans throughout history and their survival through the diaspora. It is designed to inspire and educate the community through a plethora of events, including music, cultural art, spoken word, fashion, dance, poetry, seminars, health screenings and more.

We have an extra day this February leap year, so that's one more day to celebrate!

On Monday, February 29 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., the Walker-Ford Community Center is hosting Celebrating Our Past, Present and Future. Festivities include musical selections, poem readings and guest speakers.

All of the events are free, and everyone is invited.
